1. focus on the user and all else will follow

no buying your way into search placement, sponsored links always marked as such. read the original

2. it's best to do one thing really, really well

search came first, everything else (gmail, maps) built from what worked there

3. fast is better than slow

the page still says their goal is getting you off google as fast as possible. odd goal, still true

4. democracy on the web works

pagerank's whole pitch, votes are links. this is the part that's aged the strangest

5. you don't need to be at your desk to need an answer

cites android's openness, from the mobile section. written before phones were the main way anyone searched

6. you can make money without doing evil

ads always labeled sponsored link, per the page. judge the last decade against that line yourself

7. there's always more information out there

8. the need for information crosses all borders

60+ countries, 130+ languages, per the page. the globalization argument in one line

9. you can be serious without a suit

the culture line, and genuinely the most dated-sounding paragraph on the whole page

10. great just isn't good enough

no real content here, just "good is not enough, great is the standard." the closing line, on purpose. still true
