馃摎david bowie's 100 favorite books: 18 novels to start with
the full list is 100 books deep, published 2013 on davidbowie.com. these are the novels, no memoirs or poetry, the ones i'd hand someone first
01
The Great Gatsby
Start here. It's the one everyone already owns.
02
Nineteen Eighty-Four (Orwell)
03
Lolita - Nabokov
The prose does the work of making you complicit. Uncomfortable on purpose.
04
On the Road
05
The Stranger (Camus)
Under 200 pages. Reread it in an afternoon
06
Madame Bovary
07
Inferno - Dante
Yes, that Dante. The one that surprised me most on the full 100.
08
Lady Chatterley's Lover
09
The Master and Margarita (Bulgakov)
A talking cat and the devil in Soviet Moscow. Funnier than it has any right to be
10
darkness at noon
11
A Confederacy of Dunces
Published after the author's suicide, his mother pushed for it for years. Ignatius is insufferable in the best way.
12
white noise
13
Hawksmoor (Peter Ackroyd)
No lore exam required, but this one rewards a second read. London churches as crime scenes across centuries
14
Herzog
15
The Day of the Locust
Hollywood as a slow-motion riot. Nobody assigns you this one in school and probably should.
16
Nights at the Circus
17
A Clockwork Orange
Skip the film first if you can manage it, the nadsat slang reads different on the page
18
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
The newest thing on Bowie's list by decades. Footnotes on Dominican history doing half the narrating.
19
A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess
it's on the 100 and it's the most bowie book on the whole list
