The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and what's left of each

Philo of Byzantium wrote the earliest surviving list of these c. 225 BCE, but the manuscript cuts off before naming the seventh. This follows the standard reconstruction, matching Antipater of Sidon's version.

Great Pyramid of Giza (Egypt)

the only one of the seven still standing. built c. 2560 BCE for Khufu, already over 2,000 years old by the time Philo wrote about it

Hanging Gardens of Babylon

no physical trace at all. historians still argue if they stood in Babylon or if writers mixed them up with a garden at Nineveh

Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

rebuilt twice after fire and flood before its final fall. one reconstructed column stands at the site, the rest is in the British Museum

Statue of Zeus at Olympia

Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

brought down gradually by earthquakes, c. 1200 to 1500. surviving sculpture sits in the British Museum, where "mausoleum" comes from

Colossus of Rhodes

toppled by an earthquake in 226 BCE, under 60 years after it was finished. no trace of the bronze, reportedly sold for scrap centuries later
