💬garden sayings my grandmother swore by that turned out to be true

checked most of these against actual extension advice instead of just nostalgia. she was right more than she was wrong.

the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap

about perennials. said whenever I wanted to yank something in year one for looking pathetic. still true, still tempted every year one

plant tomatoes out when the oak leaves are the size of a squirrel's ear

an actual phenology cue, not just folklore, extension offices still cite leaf-size over calendar dates for a reason

one for the mouse, one for the crow, one for the cutworm, and one to grow

why she always oversowed. thought it was superstition until i started losing a quarter of every direct-sown row myself

never compost anything that looked sick

she was right, i found out the hard way (a blighted tomato vine, whole bed of squash the next year)

water in the morning, not the evening

knee-high by the fourth of july

corn folklore, and mostly obsolete now, modern hybrids are usually well past knee-high by then. she'd hate knowing she's outdated

when the dandelions bloom, plant the potatoes

a real phenology cue, soil temp lines up with dandelion bloom close enough to matter

if it rains on easter it'll rain for seven sundays straight

the one that never once panned out. i tracked it for three years just to prove her wrong

red sky at night, gardener's delight

don't plant peas before st. patrick's day
