anime for the friend who swears they don't watch anime
ordered by how much convincing power each one has. most persuasive last
01
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
no magic, no shorthand, just a war drama that happens to be animated
02
In This Corner of the World (2016)
03
5 Centimeters per Second (2007)
slow, quiet, basically a short story collection about missed timing
04
Perfect Blue (1997)
the one that got compared to Black Swan for a reason, plays like a straight psych thriller
05
Millennium Actress (2001)
kon's least talked about film and maybe his best structured one, worth the search
06
A Silent Voice (2016)
07
Weathering with You (2019)
08
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)
handpainted, feels closer to an illustrated folk tale than 'anime'
09
Flavors of Youth (2018)
10
Your Name (2016)
11
Spirited Away (2001)
12
The Boy and the Heron (2023)
won the actual Oscar. that's the whole argument, really
