SICP. dense on purpose, pair it with the Berkeley 61A lectures or it will not click

Computer Architecture - Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective
CS:APP. this is the book that made pointers make sense to me, finally

Algorithms and Data Structures - The Algorithm Design Manual
Skiena. read the war stories, don't just skim for the pseudocode

Math for Computer Science - Mathematics for Computer Science
MIT's own 6.042 notes, free pdf. you will look this up again for the discrete math you forgot

Operating Systems - Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces
OSTEP, also free. the concurrency chapters are worth the slow read

Computer Networking - Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach

Databases - Readings in Database Systems
aka the "Red Book". it's a paper collection not a textbook, don't go in expecting chapters

Languages and Compilers - Crafting Interpreters
Bob Nystrom's, free online. site keeps the Dragon Book for after this, not instead of it

Distributed Systems - Designing Data-Intensive Applications
DDIA, Kleppmann. site still says papers are mandatory alongside it, read the docs, it doesn't let you skip those
