Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro

start here for literary restraint and relationships; the premise arrives quietly

Kindred - Octavia E. Butler

history first, time travel second; brutal and very hard to put down

Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mandel

for readers who want linked lives and art after disaster, not survival manuals

Klara and the Sun - Kazuo Ishiguro

Sea of Tranquility - Emily St. John Mandel

short chapters, several eras, and a structure that snaps together late

Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes

The Memory Police - Yoko Ogawa

choose this if quiet dread works better on you than spaceships

Annihilation - Jeff VanderMeer

the horror doorway: compact, disorienting, and intentionally unanswered

The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin

The Lathe of Heaven - Ursula K. Le Guin

reality-bending without a giant cast or a thousand-page commitment

Oryx and Crake - Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid’s Tale - Margaret Atwood

The Employees - Olga Ravn

read it for workplace alienation rendered as strange witness statements

The Space Between Worlds - Micaiah Johnson

The Power - Naomi Alderman

a social thought experiment with enough plot to keep the argument moving

The Road - Cormac McCarthy

Exhalation - Ted Chiang

use the stories as a sampler; stop between them and let each idea settle
