Perfect Blue (dir. Satoshi Kon, 1997)

the one that ruins parasocial fandom for you forever. second viewing is scarier once you know what's real

Paprika (dir. Satoshi Kon, 2006)

that parade scene alone justifies the runtime

Millennium Actress (Satoshi Kon, 2001)

quietly his best structured film, and the least talked about

Tokyo Godfathers

Wolf Children (Mamoru Hosoda)

rewatch tax is real on this one, cried less the second time and I'm not sure what that says about me

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (Hiroyuki Okiura, script by Mamoru Oshii)

cold, slow, not for everyone. the Red Riding Hood framing does a lot of work

In This Corner of the World

A Silent Voice

kyoani, obviously good, I just don't want to talk about it

Redline (Takeshi Koike)

took 7 years to animate by hand and it shows in every frame, plot is an afterthought and that's fine

Belladonna of Sadness (1973, Mushi Production)

deep cut nobody asks for. watercolor pans instead of real animation half the runtime, genuinely upsetting, not a casual friday watch
