Never miss an update

This list changes over time. Get a short email when it does.

At most one short email a week. Unfollow in one click.

Show acknowledgement after a click; if work is slow, add progress and an honest expectation instead of a frozen screen.

Match between the system and the real world

Use the customer’s nouns and natural task order, not database labels or the organization chart.

User control and freedom

Provide undo, cancel and a visible exit; confirmation dialogs are a poor substitute for reversibility.

Consistency and standards

Error prevention

Prevent high-cost mistakes with constraints, sensible defaults and confirmation that names the consequence.

Recognition rather than recall

Keep choices, formats and prior values visible so the user need not remember information from another screen.

Flexibility and efficiency of use

Aesthetic and minimalist design

Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
