2010: The Finkler Question, Howard Jacobson

still the only outright comic novel to win the whole thing. brave call from that year's judges.

2011: The Sense of an Ending, Julian Barnes

barely 150 pages and it still haunts people a decade later.

2012: Bring Up the Bodies, Hilary Mantel

2013: The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton

youngest winner ever at 28, and the longest winning novel by page count. structured around actual astrology, which shouldn't work.

2014: The Narrow Road to the Deep North, Richard Flanagan

2015: A Brief History of Seven Killings, Marlon James

2016: The Sellout, Paul Beatty

first American winner since they opened the prize to US authors back in 2014. sharpest satire on this whole list (deserved).

2017: Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders

2018: Milkman, Anna Burns

2019: The Testaments (Margaret Atwood) and Girl, Woman, Other (Bernardine Evaristo), shared

judges broke their own rules to split it. the shortlist was better that year anyway, both winners included.

2020: Shuggie Bain, Douglas Stuart

2021: The Promise, Damon Galgut

third nomination before he finally won it.

2022: The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, Shehan Karunatilaka

2023: Prophet Song, Paul Lynch

dystopian Dublin, written before most of it started sounding less like dystopia.

2024: Orbital, Samantha Harvey

shortest winner in years, set entirely on the ISS. slipped in under the radar and then won.

2025: Flesh, David Szalay
