Write one research question

Tie the question to one pending decision, such as whether to ship the new checkout; “understand users” is not testable.

Choose representative tasks

Phrase tasks as goals without naming the control: “find a way to...” reveals behavior; “click Filters” rehearses the answer.

Define success signals

Decide whether success means completion, time, errors, confidence or recovery before sessions, or any result can be rationalized.

Prepare neutral prompts

Ask “What are you thinking?” or “What would you expect here?”; “Did you notice the button?” contaminates the evidence.

Run a pilot session

Pilot with a colleague to expose broken links, missing permissions, impossible tasks and an overlong script before recruiting.
