eloping: the legal and practical checklist

planned five weddings, helped elope twice. the legal part trips people up way more than the romantic part. rules vary by state, check your own county clerk

Check your state's marriage license rules first, not last

some states make you apply in person weeks ahead, others let you do it same day online. this decides your whole timeline

Confirm the waiting period between license and ceremony

24 hours to 3 days in a lot of states, zero in others. don't assume

Bring government ID and, if either of you was married before, proof it legally ended

divorce decree or death certificate. clerks have turned people away over this

Find out if your state allows self-solemnization

Colorado and Pennsylvania let you skip an officiant entirely and just sign it yourselves. everywhere else you need one

Book a legally authorized officiant if your state requires one

Check the witness requirement for your state

some want two, some want one, Florida wants none. bring an extra person anyway, it's insurance

Confirm both of you meet the age minimum (usually 18)

Decide who's telling family and when

we told our parents the morning of and it was still awkward. earlier than you think is the move

Book the officiant and location on the same day you get the license, not before

Check if your county requires the ceremony IN that county

the license and the ceremony location rules don't always match, get it in writing from the clerk's office

Bring cash for license fees

most clerk's offices still don't take cards, I've seen it ruin a morning

Pack a printed copy of the license

phones die, wifi drops at courthouses more than you'd think

Book a photographer even if it's just one

you will regret having zero photos more than you'll regret the cost

Have a plan for the marriage certificate mail-in after the ceremony

the officiant usually files it but confirm who's responsible, this is where things get lost

Tell your bank / employer / insurance about a name change early if you're changing your name

this one takes months, start the week after

Have a backup plan if the officiant no-shows

get it in writing who your backup is, this actually happens more than people admit
