skincare actives that cancel each other out (or don't)

the ingredient pairs everyone panics about, sorted into real conflicts and internet myths. patch test first regardless.

01
Retinol + AHA/BHA
real conflict. stack them the same night and you're flaking by day three. I split them, acids AM, retinol PM.
02
Vitamin C + Niacinamide
this one's a myth from a 1960s study that never reflected finished formulas. AAD and Paula's Choice have both said so directly.
03
Retinol + Benzoyl Peroxide
benzoyl peroxide oxidizes retinol and kills its potency within minutes. use bp in the morning, retinol at night, never in the same layer.
04
Retinol + Vitamin C
05
Two acids at once (AHA + BHA)
06
Copper Peptides + Vitamin C
07
Niacinamide + Retinol
actually a good combo, niacinamide calms the irritation retinol causes
08
Azelaic Acid + Retinol
09
Multiple retinoids at once (OTC retinol + prescription tretinoin)
don't. this is the one where more isn't better, you'll just strip your barrier
10
Hyaluronic Acid + literally anything
11
Chemical exfoliant + skipping sunscreen after
not an ingredient conflict but the actual danger. spf every day or the acid did nothing but make you burn faster
12
Sunscreen layered under makeup vs. after skincare
order matters less than people think as long as it's the last skincare step (patch test first if you're switching formulas)
