🎬0 to ghibli fan: the order that actually works

for the friend who has genuinely seen zero Miyazaki. not release order, story-payoff order.

start here. low stakes, gorgeous, no war metaphor to untangle. this is the one that actually gets people to watch a second Ghibli movie.

Castle in the Sky

the first film released under the Ghibli name, technically, and still the template for the adventure ones.

zero fantasy elements, just a kid trying to write a book. good gut check for whether someone likes Ghibli or just likes the fantasy ones.

Princess Mononoke

the one everyone's already heard of, so save it for here - the earlier ones don't feel small by comparison this way.

The Wind Rises

Miyazaki's most adult film by a wide margin. wait until someone's actually invested before this one.

Grave of the Fireflies

last on purpose. not a kids' movie despite the studio, and you need to already care about this world before it wrecks you.
